Professor Dr. Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, a member of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, emphasized that “Civil engineering is the backbone of sustainable development.” He further stated, “From roads and bridges to buildings and water management, civil engineering is deeply embedded in our daily lives. There is no alternative to civil engineering in the development of natural disaster prevention, environmentally friendly technologies, and sustainable infrastructure. According to the theme of this conference, civil engineering is involved with almost everything in a diverse world. Therefore, our action plans must be extensive. I believe that our young researchers and students will explore new ideas and knowledge from this conference, which will benefit future generations.”
He made these remarks as the chief guest of the online inauguration of the “7th International Conference on Advances in Civil Engineering (ICACE-2024),” organized by the Department of Civil Engineering of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET).
The conference’s opening ceremony took place at CUET’s central auditorium on Thursday, with Professor Dr. Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan, Vice-Chancellor of CUET, serving as the guest of honor. Former Vice-Chancellors and professors of CUET’s Civil Engineering Department, Dr. Mohammad Mojammel Hossain and Dr. Mohammad Jahangir Alam, were also present.
Professor Dr. Sudip Kumar Pal, Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was a special guest at the event. The conference’s president, Professor Dr. Ayesha Akhtar, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, chaired the session, while Professor Dr. Mohammad Sajeeb Ullah, conference secretary, gave the welcome address. The event was hosted by Assistant Professor Mukta Banu and Lecturer Mohammad Asifur Rahman from the Civil Engineering Department.
In his guest of honor speech, CUET’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan, said, “Civil engineering is working to make our lives easier and more enjoyable. As we face global challenges like urbanization, climate change, and resource scarcity, the role of civil engineers in building a sustainable and resilient society has become even more critical. I believe this three-day international conference will expand the knowledge of our youth, as professionals, researchers, and scholars worldwide exchange research and new ideas, enabling them to shape a dynamic and sustainable society.”
The ongoing conference features top academics, scientists, researchers, and decision-makers from eight countries—Bangladesh, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the UAE, and the Netherlands. The conference will present two keynote papers and four invited papers. A total of 447 research papers will be presented, with 184 through online presentations and 263 through offline presentations.
