Global telecom giant Huawei has announced a series of initiatives in Bangladesh, including the launch of an intelligent classroom at Dhaka University, the establishment of an innovation lab in collaboration with the ICT Division, and the introduction of the “China-Bangladesh Fintech Exchange Program” for professionals, experts, researchers, and academics in the economic sector.
The announcement was made during the inauguration ceremony of Huawei’s new office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Wednesday evening. Distinguished guests at the event included Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, BTRC Chairman Major General Md. Emdad Ul Bari, ICT Division Secretary Shish Haider Chowdhury, Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare Dr. Md. Mohiuddin, and Dhaka University Treasurer Professor M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
A highlight of the event was the unveiling of the “Bangladesh Broadband Connectivity Research Report,” jointly prepared by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). BTRC Chairman Major General Md. Emdad Ul Bari released the report, which offers an in-depth analysis of broadband development in Bangladesh, encompassing national broadband policies, international standards, ecosystems, business environments, and specific national scenarios. CAICT Vice President Wang Zhijin joined the unveiling virtually.
In his speech, Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen remarked, “As a leading ICT infrastructure provider, Huawei has been working with dedication in Bangladesh for the past 26 years. From 2G to 5G, Huawei has led the ICT sector and become a vital digital communication service provider in the country. I am pleased to see Chinese companies holding a positive outlook for Bangladesh’s future.”
BTRC Chairman Md. Emdad Ul Bari stated, “Huawei has established itself as a trusted partner in the technological advancement of Bangladesh. Its unwavering commitment to the country is reflected through significant investments, technological support, and innovative solutions. Huawei’s efforts have elevated our telecommunications sector to new heights, particularly in extending connectivity to remote areas.”
Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur noted, “China and Bangladesh have maintained a longstanding friendship that is continuously strengthening. I am delighted to see Huawei’s South Asia headquarters in Dhaka. This decision is crucial for our development, bilateral relations, and the progress of Bangladeshi youth.”
ICT Secretary Shish Haider Chowdhury highlighted, “Huawei has been a cornerstone in the development of Bangladesh’s ICT sector. With nations advancing globally, having support from a country like China and a company like Huawei is invaluable. I believe Huawei’s ICT training initiatives will enhance the knowledge and skills of our researchers.”
Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare Dr. Md. Mohiuddin remarked, “This initiative is a significant step towards technological advancement and a brighter future. Huawei, as one of the world’s leading technology companies, can play a pivotal role in shaping Bangladesh’s ICT sector in the future.”
Professor M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Treasurer of Dhaka University, expressed gratitude for Huawei’s efforts, saying, “Huawei’s initiative to support the development of Dhaka University is highly commendable. These efforts will help overcome challenges such as skill gaps, outdated systems, and infrastructural limitations.”
Welcoming the attendees, Pan Junfeng, President of Huawei South Asia and CEO of Huawei Bangladesh, said, “Huawei’s journey in Bangladesh has been one of unique innovation.
