The High Court has granted a three-month bail to former president of the e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB) and actress Shomi Kaiser in a case related to an attempted murder during an anti-discrimination student movement in Uttara East Police Station area.
The bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayetur Rahim issued the order on Tuesday, December 10, following a hearing of her bail petition. Barrister Hamidul Misbah represented Shomi Kaiser in court during the hearing.
On December 8, Shomi Kaiser filed her bail petition with the relevant branch of the High Court, seeking release in the attempted murder case lodged with Uttara East Police Station.
Shomi Kaiser was arrested from her residence in Uttara on the night of November 5. Subsequently, a court granted a three-day remand for her. After the remand ended on November 9, she was sent to jail.
According to reports, during the anti-discrimination student movement on July 18, businessman Ishtiaq Mahmud and others participated in a program near Nawab Habibullah High School in Azampur, Sector 4 of Uttara. The program was allegedly attacked by members of the Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League, who also opened fire. Ishtiaq sustained a bullet wound to his abdomen and received treatment at Evercare Hospital.
On September 29, Ishtiaq Mahmud filed an attempted murder case with Uttara East Police Station, naming former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and 126 others as accused. In this case, Shomi Kaiser was listed as the 24th accused in the First Information Report (FIR).
