Shaon Solaiman, a member of the Bangladesh ICT Journalist Forum (BIJF) and staff reporter for Daily Kalbela, has received death threats over his investigative reporting on the country’s technology sector. The threats were sent via WhatsApp from a foreign number, according to Solaiman.
On Wednesday evening, he filed a General Diary (GD) with the New Market Police Station in Dhaka (GD No. 1611). Authorities have since launched an investigation into the WhatsApp number used to issue the threats.
According to the GD, Solaiman received threatening messages on two occasions—November 16 and November 26—spanning three separate instances. The initial message warned:
“Mr. Shaon, you’ve been overstepping lately. Don’t think the new government will protect you. Our time will come, and we’ll settle scores then. Be cautious before that time arrives. Too much journalism is not good for you. Take care and stay safe; we’re watching you.”
The most recent message stated:
“You didn’t listen, did you? Now, whatever happens, it’s on you. Be careful. Enjoy writing so much? Facebook posts, news articles—let’s see how long that lasts.”
Speaking on the matter, Solaiman said: “At first, I didn’t take it seriously. But as the threats persisted, I felt compelled to report it. I’m now concerned about the safety of myself and my family.”
Solaiman has been in journalism since 2016, working for media outlets including Jugantor, Banglanews, Ekattor Television, and Kalbela.
