The Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) has issued show cause notices to 11 students following allegations of ragging. The notices, signed by Student Discipline Committee Secretary and Director of Student Welfare Md. Mahbubul Alam, were issued on Tuesday.
The accused students are from the Civil Engineering Department of the 2022-23 academic session. They are alleged to have harassed several first-year students from the 2023-24 session.
According to the notices, on the night of November 5 at 10:30 PM, the accused students allegedly took members of CUET’s 23rd batch outside the university’s main gate, near Imam Ghazzali College, and subjected them to harassment. The incident was deemed a violation of the university’s disciplinary code. The notice demands the accused students explain why disciplinary actions, including potential sanctions, should not be taken against them under university regulations. They are required to appear in person at the Student Welfare Office by December 10 to respond.
Commenting on the matter, Director of Student Welfare Md. Mahbubul Alam stated, “New students need support and guidance, not harassment. Such incidents are inhumane, and the university administration maintains a zero-tolerance policy against ragging. Based on the investigation, 11 students have been asked to explain their actions, and appropriate measures will follow their responses.”
The incident underscores CUET’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all students.
