Three separate investigation teams have been formed to probe the tragic electrocution of students aboard a double-decker bus from the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) in Gazipur’s Sreepur. The incident occurred during a picnic trip to the Matir Maya Resort, resulting in the death of three third-year students from the Mechanical and Production Engineering Department.
On Monday, November 25, representatives from IUT, BUET, and the Rural Electrification Board (REB) visited the site in Udaykhali, Telihati Union, to investigate. The teams were led by IUT Professor Rakib Hasan, BUET Professor Ziaur Rahman Khan, and REB’s Mymensingh Zone-2 General Manager Akmal Hossain.
Speaking to reporters, BUET Professor Ziaur Rahman Khan highlighted preliminary findings, stating, “The road leading to the resort has been raised by approximately three feet in recent years, causing the 11,000-volt power line to sag dangerously low. This likely led to the double-decker bus roof coming into contact with the line.” He also observed that power lines in the area appeared loose in several places, adding, “Questions arise about why such a large vehicle was permitted on a narrow road under low-hanging power lines.”
Local accounts reveal that the incident occurred when the bus, attempting to pass through the narrow road, came into contact with the power line, resulting in sparks and the tragic deaths of three students: Mir Mozammel (23) from Feni, Zubair Alam (22) from Rajshahi, and Mubtasim Rahman (22) from Rangpur.
In response, the REB has marked the area as hazardous with red flags, while the investigation continues. Authorities, including IUT, REB, BRTC, and the resort management, are facing scrutiny over their role in the incident.
The fatal accident has sparked widespread concern, with calls for increased oversight and improved safety measures in public infrastructure to prevent such tragedies.
