Bangladesh has dropped one more spot in the Global Innovation Index (GII) this year, ranking 106th out of 133 countries. In 2023, Bangladesh had already slipped three places, ranking 105th out of 132 countries. The country continues to lag behind its neighbors, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, in the innovation index.
In contrast, Bangladesh was ranked 116th in the GII in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the country made a significant leap, moving up 14 places to rank 102nd.
The Global Innovation Index, published Thursday night by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is based on 80 indicators. These indicators assess a country’s performance across seven main categories: institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, market sophistication, business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs, and creative outputs. Bangladesh received a score of 19.1 out of 100. In specific categories, Bangladesh scored 29.8 in infrastructure, 15.7 in creative outputs, 23.93 in market sophistication, 13.75 in knowledge and technology outputs, 30.45 in institutions, 13.49 in business sophistication, and 11.39 in human capital and research.
WIPO reported that in the past four years, Bangladesh’s ranking in the GII has fluctuated between 97th and 112th. Although the country’s ranking has declined by one spot this year, its position in innovation inputs remains unchanged. However, it has slipped by three places in innovation outputs.
Additionally, among 38 lower-middle-income countries, Bangladesh ranks 22nd in the GII 2024 index, and 8th among 10 economies in Central and Southern Asia.
