Four adolescents from Bangladesh have won a gold medal at the 6th World Invention Competition and Exhibition 2024. They achieved this remarkable feat by presenting a technological solution for road safety. The team members are Md. Tawsin Elahi (Harimohan Government High School), L.M. Mahir Labib (Dhaka Residential Model College), Md. Abdus Siam (Harimohan Government High School), and Ahnaf Shahriar (Harimohan Government High School).
The competition, jointly organized by MAHSA University in Malaysia and the Indonesian Young Scientists Association (IYSA), took place from September 21 to 25. Around 300 teams of young innovators from 15 countries participated in the event.
Bangladesh’s Team Spark outshined the rest with their innovation. Their ‘Safe Driving System 2.0’ stood out among 126 teams in the IT and Robotics category for the secondary school division. In their presentation, Team Spark demonstrated how technology can be used to reduce road accidents and ensure safe journeys. They showcased a special device comprising a CPU, tablet, tachometer, camera, vibrator, and LiDAR. This device integrates multiple sensors, and the CPU processes the information to make decisions and protect the driver. By using artificial intelligence algorithms, the system helps correct driver errors and ensures the safety of all road users.
Impressed by the sustainable use of technology and the presentation by these young innovators, the judges awarded them the highest score in the IT and Robotics category. In addition to the gold medal, they were also honored with the Malaysia Innovation Invention Creativity Association (MIICA) award for their innovative thinking and technological excellence.
The team was guided by their mentor, Yahia Ahmed Sharif, a lecturer at Dhaka Residential Model College. Expressing his excitement over their success, he said, “This achievement will inspire young innovators to represent Bangladesh on the global stage and lead the country toward further success in the future.”
Team leader Md. Tawsin Elahi shared, “We learned about this competition through social media. After submitting the project details via the website, we received an acceptance letter and started preparing for the event in Malaysia. The most difficult part for us was hardware implementation, as we had to integrate multiple features on a single motherboard. It was quite challenging, but our hardware team did an excellent job. The software team also designed and programmed everything brilliantly. As a result, we outperformed 126 teams from countries like Mexico, the USA, Turkmenistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and Thailand. We now seek support to further upgrade and modify our safety device and bring it to the market.”
