As part of the national reform initiative, several reform committees have been formed, and meetings with these committees have already taken place. The reform activities are set to commence from October. The committees will develop frameworks through discussions with relevant and experienced stakeholders, and subsequent reforms will be initiated based on those frameworks. There are plans to establish several reform commissions, including for education and media.
This was announced by Mohammad Nahid Islam, Advisor to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, after visiting flood-affected areas in Bangakha and Mandari Unions in Lakshmipur district on Friday afternoon. Prior to this, the advisor distributed food aid to flood victims at Bangakha High School and Jadoya Fazil Madrasa. Present at the time were Lakshmipur District Commissioner Rajib Kumar Sarker, Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Majidul Haque Reza from the Bangladesh Army, Lakshmipur Superintendent of Police Mohammad Akhtar Hossain, Deputy Director of the Local Government Division Mohammad Rafiqul Haque, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Yusuf Mia, and Executive Officer (UNO) of Sadar Upazila Arifur Rahman, among others.
During the food distribution, Lakshmipur District Commissioner Rajib Kumar Sarker and senior local administration officials were also present. Nahid Islam stated that after the student-people uprising, the country experienced a severe flood. We have witnessed the public’s maximum cooperation during this disaster. The students worked shoulder to shoulder with the public and the administration, which was unprecedented. He expressed hope that this spirit would continue. He further emphasized that rehabilitation efforts for the flood victims are now a priority, and they are working diligently to expedite the rehabilitation process.
Nahid Islam also noted that water levels are receding, and people are gradually returning home from shelters. However, the water is receding more slowly in Lakshmipur due to the encroachment of canals, and initiatives will be taken to free those canals from illegal occupation. Allocations for the construction of homes for those affected by the flood in Lakshmipur have already been sent, and construction is expected to begin soon based on that allocation.
He firmly declared that the trial of fascists will take place on this very soil of Bengal. The military has been granted magistracy powers, and he expressed hope that the law and order situation would quickly return to normal as a result.
Following the distribution of aid, Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Majidul Haque Reza briefed the advisor on the flood situation and the ongoing relief efforts at the district police outpost guest house. The advisor also held discussions with district coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Later, he distributed food aid to flood victims at Begumganj Upazila Administration Office and Moutrubi village in Sonaimuri Upazila, at Nawabganj Government Primary School No. 53.
