National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan has requested everyone to file returns online. On the other hand, the president of Bangladesh Civil Service (Tax) Association stressed the importance of automation as well as advanced training for tax officials to reduce the time in revenue collection. These calls came up during a discussion on ‘Changes in Direct Tax through Finance Act, 2024’ organized by Bangladesh Civil Service (Taxation) Association at NBR’s Multipurpose Hall at Agargaon in the capital on Saturday (September 14).

While speaking as the chief guest, Finance Advisor Dr. Saleh Uddin Ahmed said, ‘Foreign investment will not be available much. Because of this, we have to rely on internal revenue.’ And for this reason, he has also insisted that the length of time in revenue collection should be reduced.
He said, ‘You direct taxes can’t be evaded. But we have problems in indirect taxes. Do not collect revenue from anyone keeping them in hardship.’
Addressing the tax officials, the financial adviser said, ‘Taxpayers should not be afraid. Do justice to them.’ Mentioning the need for money at the moment, the advisor also urged to reduce wastage of government money. He also urged to insist on raising funds from own sources instead of relying on foreign loans.
At that time, National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman Abdur Rahman Khan said, ‘Tax will not be collected from anyone by force. From now on, not oppression, rather relief will be given to taxpayers.’
Announcing to make NBR laws business friendly, he said, ‘We request everyone to file returns online. People are burdened with debt, while NBR is not able to collect the desired revenue. You have to get out of here.’
The NBR chairman also said that there is a rumor that the revenue paid by the tax payers is wasted in various ways. NBR should get out of here.
President of Bangladesh Civil Service (Tax) Association Md. Lutful Azim said that reform of income tax is necessary among the reform activities of the interim government.
At this time, he emphasized on automation as well as better training for tax officials and said that if 1 thousand crore taka is invested here, it will be possible to collect 5 thousand crore taka as revenue.
