The students of the Polytechnic Institute have joined the agitation demanding a number of issues like not recruiting manpower outside technical education in the management of technical sector, making Diploma Engineering course 4 years duration and designing semesters a term of full 6 months, removal of controversial appointments of craft instructors in 2021from technical directorate and all institutes, recruiting manpower for all vacant posts in technical sector and completed the recruitment process quickly, all the recruitment rules of the Directorate of Technical Education should be amended and no one other than Diploma in Engineers should be allowed to apply for the post of Assistant Engineer 10th grade.
To meet these demands, a group of students blocked the road under the banner of ‘Technical Student Movement’ in Satrasta area of Tejgaon industrial area of the capital on Monday. This caused traffic jam on Moghbazar-Mohakhali, Khamarbari-Farmgate-Shahbagh-Karwan Bazar Road. By noon, almost the entire road from Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue to Shahbagh was jam-packed.
All these roads are seen in red on Google map. Apart from this, the roads around Manik Mia Avenue, Moghbazar, Eskaton, Hatirjheel were seen red. That is, the traffic congestion on these roads was intense. Hundreds of cars were stuck in these areas. Ordinary passengers suffered a lot. But the protesters let the ambulances move on.
The students blocked the road at around 12 noon on Monday, Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Gazi Shamimur Rahman said that traffic on both sides of the road has stopped due to the blockade.
DMP Tejgaon Zone Assistant Commissioner (Traffic) Snehasheesh said, students have been protesting by blocking roads on Satrasta since morning. This has caused severe traffic congestion in all these areas. Although they were told to move off the road, they continued to protest.
Additional deputy Commissioner Taniya Sultana said, “Traffic could not be forwarder towards Bijoy Sorony as the blockade barred the traffic to cross the Bijoy Sorony Flyover.”
