Debjyoti Das Soumya, a Class 12 student of Sylhet’s Jalalabad Cantonment Public School and College, became the first Bangladeshi to win a gold medal at the 36th International Informatics Olympiad (IOI). Apart from him, Zarif Rahman, a student of Shah Makhdoom College, Rajshahi, and Akib Azmain Turjo, a student of Yasin College, Faridpur, won bronze medals. They won this award by solving problems in programming languages C and C++.
The result has been published on the IOI website . The results showed that a total of 30 gold medals were won by the world in the 5-hour sessions held over two days. Among them, Soumya in Bangladesh gave 62.57 percent correct solutions. There were 69 silver winners in the competition. And the number of bronze winners is 88. Among them, Zarif, who won the bronze for Bangladesh, gave 40.37 percent correct answers and Akib Azmain Turya gave 36.33 percent correct answers.
Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Adviser Md. Nahid Islam congratulated the winners. The advisor said that the achievement of the young talented students of Bangladesh has increased the country’s reputation in the international arena. I am very happy with this achievement. It is proof that the youth of Bangladesh are skilled and interested in information technology. Adviser Nahid Islam has expressed his interest to meet the Bangladesh team after coming to the country.
Four members of the Bangladesh team participated in the event held at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in Alexandria, Egypt. Among them, gold medalist Soumya won bronze in 2022 and silver in 2023. And Zarif, who won bronze, got the same medal in 2023 and honorable mention in 2022. And Turya won the first medal this time.
This season, which started from September 1, will end on September 8. The other two members who participated in the competition are Desh Acharya. Professor M. Sohail Rahman of CSE Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology is the team leader.
It is worth mentioning that, Bangladesh has been participating in the International Informatics Olympiad for the past 20 years. Total number of medals won by Bangladesh is 32. Among them, 1 gold medal has come for the first time. Apart from this, Bangladesh has 6 silver medals, 24 bronze medals and 1 honorable mention.
