Technologist Sumon Ahmed Sabir thinks that ‘we have brought danger to the country’s telecom and internet technology because of the law’. At the same time, he expressed anxiety that due to the ignorance of the citizens, the social media are not respecting our personal information protection but have plotted with the government.
He expressed this opinion in the civil dialogue held at BASIS Conference Center in Karwanbazar of the capital on Saturday. Fahim Mashroor, convener of Civil Reform Bangladesh 2.0, moderated this civil dialogue on Interception, right to privacy and freedom of speech in the new Bangladesh.
Fahim Mashroor, in his opening speech at the dialogue said that telecom operators are obliged to provide facilities for direct phone call tapping due to license guidelines. Also violates constitution and law by intercepting specific location or target wireless network and directly accessing the device. But what software is used; In such a situation, no citizen is known to have taken the legal right. So, we have to think about what to do about it.
Sumon Ahmed Sabir, as the first speaker, said that NTMC does not have the capacity to record the phones of everyone in the country due to the large number of population and the use of devices. But if you talk to a VIP, he also gets trapped.
He also said that DoT has been tracking internet traffic since 2018. They can monitor and delete any content. That is why they force us to use special devices in our office and are forced to give them access to them. Even that device can’t be moved. So, as Gmail was shut down during the student uprising, YouTube could not be shut down this time. Some social media compromised with the government which made it possible to leak Mahmudul Manna’s call records. Because, that call went around the terminals of two countries. Domains which were previously closed have not yet been opened. It’s as if everyone has a mindset of accepting them.
