A seven-member committee has been constituted to investigate the root cause behind the shutdown of internet connection during the anti-discrimination student movement and identify the people who were involved. Additional Secretary (Telecom) AKM Amirul Islam has been constituted as the head of this committee.
In a meeting with officials in the department on Sunday (August 11), Adviser Nahid Islam ordered to take action against those involved subject to inquiry and investigation through the committee.
In this regard, the telecom adviser Nahid Islam said to the journalists that, the use of internet has become digital rights. It is a matter of human rights. Shutting down the internet or bringing it to a limited level should be done keeping in mind that, this is an issue linked with human rights. So that no one’s human rights are violated, there is free flow of information, everyone including journalists can know the truth. I will try today, on the first day, to investigate the digital crackdown (internet shutdown) in the last movement.
However, Amirul Islam said in the afternoon that the first meeting of the committee was held today. The committee has one member each from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) besides vice-chairman of the commission Aminul Haque, but the names of the rest of the members could not be confirmed till Sunday afternoon.
