Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan commented that social media is now a ‘dangerous’ business. He made this comment on Thursday while hearing a case in the Appellate Division. The Chief Justice said that social media is now a dangerous business. Domestic matters now come to social media. If we say something about social media, the question of right to freedom again arises.
Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon was the lawyer in that case regarding contempt of court of pro-BNP lawyers. The court adjourned till August 22 and asked the lawyers to appear on that day. Among the seven lawyers, the name of lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali was omitted as he had passed away.
On August 29 last year, at a program on Mourning Day event, lawyer Mohammad Nazmul Huda filed a contempt of court petition against some pro-BNP lawyers for continuing the procession-slogan-meeting based on the speech of a judge of the Appellate Division, “We are the judges of Bangladesh, we are sworn politicians”. Later, in an order on November 15, the Appellate Division summoned seven pro-BNP lawyers to appear in person and explain the contempt of court charges on January 15. Accordingly, on January 15, seven lawyers appeared in the Appellate Division. The hearing was later adjourned.
The lawyers are, General Secretary of Nationalist Lawyers Forum and BNP Legal Affairs Secretary Barrister Qaiser Kamal, Former Secretary of Supreme Court Bar Association Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, BNP Executive Committee Member Advocate Fahima Nasreen Munni, President of Nationalist Lawyers Forum Supreme Court Branch Advocate Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan and Supreme Court Former Co-Editor of the Bar Advocate Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Khan and General Secretary of the Supreme Court Branch of the Nationalist Lawyers Forum Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal.
Earlier, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court had exempted six top lawyer leaders of BNP from personal appearance in the contempt of court case for holding a press conference and rally against two judges of the Appellate Division on June 12. At the same time, they were asked to give a written explanation by July 25 regarding the allegations of contempt of court. Following that, six lawyers filed their explanation.
