Students sign a pledge banning student politics
Agitated students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology- JUST who are on a movement demanding for quota reform in government jobs took back the students’ residential halls occupied by the goons of Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling party. During the raid, the students recovered a large quantity of weapons (pistol, revolver, ramda and knife etc.), cannabis and empty bottles of liquor from rooms numbered 210, 211, 214, 423, 424 and 429 of the hall.
After conducting the campaign, the students took the signature of the provost of the hall on a written statement with the hall administration as well as a written commitment on 6 issues including banning student politics.
It is said in the pledge that all student politics (irrespective of Chhatra League, Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Front, Jamaat, Shibir) should be banned from today. The entry of any kind of armed forces should be prohibited. Those involved in student politics should be immediately and permanently expelled from the hall.
Also, some other issues are mentioned by the students in the pledge. It was signed by the Provost of Shah Paran Hall, an Associate Professor, Architect Kaushik Saha.
Earlier on Wednesday (July 17) students rushed the hall around 4 pm. The agitators carried out this operation with the aim of rescuing non-student residents, outsiders and weapons and to ensure accommodation of common students in the halls.
After conducting the raid, the students said in a written statement to the hall administration, “We common students searched the rooms occupied by Chhatra League goons in Shah Paran Hall and recovered 1 revolver, 1 short gun, a large number of indigenous weapons and more than 100 liquor bottles.” The raiding students said that they recovered these.
In a press conference after the operation, SUST coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, Asadullah Al Ghalib, said that ordinary students recovered these illegal tools with the cooperation of the university hall administration. University administration should punish those involved in these illegal activities. These weapons and drug importers should be banned from the university for life and a political environment should be ensured.
In the press conference, Shah Paran Hall Provost Associate Professor Architect Kaushik Saha said that the students recovered these illegal tools from the hall. These have been handed over to us. Whoever brought these to the hall, the university administration will take them out subject to investigation. The administration will take appropriate action against those involved.
