All local and international payments with Bangladesh Bank, the central bank of Bangladesh were suspended on Wednesday afternoon. According to sources, internet banking has also been disrupted due to Bangladesh Bank’s server being down. However, after six hours, it was reported that it was possible to normalize the activities.
The source said that this happened due to a technical glitch.
Earlier, the top officials of some banks said that all local and international payments with the central bank have been suspended after noon. The National Payment Switch Bangladesh (NPSB) system introduced to facilitate card-based inter-bank transactions was also closed.
An official of the central bank said on condition of anonymity that the server went down on Wednesday (April 5) around 12:00 noon. As a result, the clearing system used for transactions since noon was not working.
After learning about the matter, one of the officials of Bangladesh Bank’s IT department started the server repair work.
According to sources, the problem was resolved after 7 pm.
According to sources, local and international payment settlement including check clearing has been disrupted due to the same. Daily transactions of 400 crore taka were done through NPSB. If it was offline, these transactions were suspended.
However, it was not confirmed why the server of Bangladesh Bank was down. No information was received from the responsible sources in this regard.
