The Election Commission (EC) is monitoring the re-polling of the by-election in Gaibandha-5 constituency, which was closed due to irregularities, sitting in Dhaka for the sake of technology. The commission secretaries are monitoring the field election situation through CC cameras in the control room on the fifth floor of the commission building in Agargaon of the capital.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal started this monitoring work with commission secretaries from 8 am on Wednesday (January 4). Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Brigadier General retired Ahsan Habib Khan, Election Commissioner Md. Alamgir, Election Commissioner Rasheda Sultana and Election Commissioner Anishur Rahman were present in the control room and observed the election. It is said that this monitoring continued till the end of polling till 4 pm.
According to the sources of the Election Commission, the election was being monitored through a total of 1,242 CCTVs. Gaibandha has a total of 32 grazing areas in this constituency. The voting process is being monitored through CCTV in each polling station in these remote areas. Election monitoring is being done by installing one in each polling station and two in each polling station.
At around 10 am, people were seen standing in long queues since morning, ignoring the cold. Voting is being done on CC cameras. Till that time no untoward incident was reported in the election.
Gaibandha-5 constituencies consisting of Phulchari and Saghata upazilas of Gaibandha district have a total of 145 polling stations in 17 unions. There are 952 polling booths. The total number of voters in the constituency is 3 lakh 39 thousand 743 people. When Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Mia died on July 23, his parliamentary seat was declared vacant. Then on October 12, during the by-election of the Gaibandha-5 seat, the EC ordered to stop the election when the irregularities were found in one-third of the polling stations on the CC camera.
It is to be noted that, Rangpur and Comilla City Corporation Elections, Jhenaidah Municipal Elections and the recently canceled Gaibandha-5 Constituency by-elections were conducted by the EC through CCTV monitoring. In continuation of this, the re-election in Gaibandha-5 seat is also being monitored by CC cameras.
