Meta has been fined by Ireland after hundreds of thousands of Facebook users’ personal information was leaked online. The country’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) fined Meta by 26.5 million euros.
In September 2019, hackers took advantage of a flaw in the tool to scrape users’ data. Hackers leaked phone numbers and email addresses of 53 million users in an online hacking forum.
In this context, the DPC launched an investigation in April 2021. At that time, Facebook said about the leaked information; some of the leaked information had gone online a few years ago. They are not hacked.
DPC claims that Meta has breached Article 25 of the General Data Protection Regulation. The platform should have informed about these incidents in due time.
