An arrest warrant has been issued against Shamima Nasreen, the chairman of e-commerce company Evaly, amid initiatives to return to business. The arrest warrant was issued in a Digital Security Act case filed against consumers for fraud.
Shamim Al Mamun, bench assistant of the tribunal, confirmed the matter on Wednesday (October 26).
He said that on September 30, 2021, a customer named Alamgir Hossain filed a case against Russell and Shamima of Evaly in Badda Police Station under the Digital Security Act on charges of embezzlement through digital means. On this day, Shamima applied for time through the lawyer without appearing in the court. However, Dhaka Cyber Tribunal judge Mohammad Ashshams Jaglul Hossain denied his bail and issued the arrest warrant.
At the same time, January 22 has been fixed as the date for the hearing of the complaint, said the bench assistant of the tribunal.
Meanwhile, in the statement of the case, it is said that the plaintiff came to know about Evaly in various social media including Facebook in the beginning of 2020. Various daily necessities including electronics products were offered there at low prices. In most cases it was advertised to sell at about half the market price.
Later, the plaintiff opened two accounts with two mobile numbers through Evaly app. He used his ID to order various products worth approximately five lakh taka. He opened another ID in the name of his friend and ordered various products worth 23 lakh taka. The plaintiff ordered a total of 28 lakh taka with these two IDs. This money is later paid through mobile banking service bKash, Nagad, and other bank accounts.
The statement also said that Evaly was supposed to deliver the ordered products within the stipulated 45 working days. But even after seven months, the plaintiff did not get the goods. After contacting Evaly authorities several times in this regard, they promised to deliver the product and delayed it.
Even today, the plaintiff Alamgir Hossain has not received the goods ordered for more than 28 lakh taka, it is mentioned in the statement.
After the investigation of this case, on September 16 this year (2022), CID Police Sub-Inspector Pradeep Kumar filed a charge sheet against Russell and Shamima.
Currently Evaly entrepreneur and managing director Mohammad Russell is in jail. And his wife Shamima Nasreen was released on bail on April 6 and came out of jail.
