Posts and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar commented that various rumors were spread about Bangabandhu’s relationship with the media. These rumors and propaganda have not stopped even today. We have to remember that journalism and Facebook posting are not the same thing. Journalism cannot be irresponsible. There is no substitute for responsible journalism to prevent rumours, misinformation. We can write anything on Facebook but in the newspaper. Accountability is part of journalism.
He commented so at the Mourning Day discussion program titled ‘Responsible Journalism and Bangabandhu’s Guidance’ at Dhaka Reporters Unity’s Nasrul Hamid Auditorium at Segunbagicha in the capital on Tuesday (August 30).
While speaking as the chief guest, Mustafa Jabbar said that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has contributed to building the country as a digital Bangladesh and connecting Bangladesh with the world. There is no place left in the state formation of the country where Bangabandhu did not have a touch. Bangabandhu has contributed everywhere to make Bangladesh an ideal state. Bangabandhu’s contribution to the development of Bangladesh is indelible. Sheikh Hasina has turned the seeds of digital Bangladesh planted by Bangabandhu into saplings. She has done a great job in the spread of computers in the country.
Speaking about journalism, the minister also said that even today, we have not been able to replace the law that Bangabandhu made for journalists. During Bangabandhu’s rule, falsehoods and rumors were spread against him. How many journalists did Bangabandhu put in jail? The program that Bangabandhu took in ’75 had a context. Why did he call for a second revolution? How famine was created in ’74? Those places are misinterpreted.
Mustafa Jabbar said, Bangabandhu made Bangladesh a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). During the launch of Bangabandhu satellite, it was found that we have two ground stations. One of those satellites were established at Betbuniya geospatial station. It was established by Bangabandhu. He established it to connect Bangladesh with the world.
The Minister of Posts and Telecommunications also said that it was my responsibility to publish postal tickets to remember the historical issues of the country. We started this work on the occasion of Bangabandhu’s birth centenary. After publishing hundreds of postage stamps, I see that some very important parts of Bangabandhu’s life have been left out. Next time I said that nothing historical of Bangabandhu’s period from ’72 to ’75 should be left out. The postal department gave the list to me, I saw that if I were to publish them, the budget I have in the postal and telecommunication department would not fit.
Professor Dr. ZM Parvez Sajjad, Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University, Kishoreganj was the special guest in the discussion meeting. Global Television CEO Syed Ishtiaq Reza, DBC News Editor Pranab Saha, BFUJ General Secretary Deep Azad, Dhaka Reporters Unity President Nazrul Islam Mithu and General Secretary Nurul Islam Hasib and others were also present in the program.
FM Shaheen, Chief Editor of Jagran TV conducted the meeting while Bani Yasmin Hashi, Editor of Bbarta24.net, Rabiul Islam Rupam, Organizing Editor of Gaurab ’71 and others were also present. Shamima Dola, Chief Editor of News Now21 presided over the meeting.
