The Cabinet has approved the draft of ‘Light Engineering Industry Development Policy-2022’. This approval was given in the virtual cabinet meeting held on Monday (August 22) chaired by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Khandkar Anwarul Islam informed the journalists at the press briefing held at the Secretariat.
The Prime Minister attended the meeting from the Ganavaban and the Ministers of State attended the meeting through video conference from the meeting room of the Cabinet Division of the Secretariat. After the meeting, the cabinet secretary said that under this policy, the ‘light engineering industry’ established in different areas of the country will be institutionalized. He said there are about 40 thousand light engineering industries in Bangladesh. 6 lakh technical experts and entrepreneurs are actively involved. It will act as an incentive for them. They will be motivated to work.
He said, a policy has been brought for light engineering in our country. For this, the local industry will expand and the role of the industrial sector will increase. Our economy will grow further. It will play a big role in the developed country we are going to be by 2041.
Khandaker Anwarul Islam said, under this policy, those who are authentic producers will get many types of backup. Especially, Bangladesh Bank has a special advantage, which is 2 percent rate of interest. They will get those benefits if they invest in these sectors following policies.
He further said, Bangladesh Bank has a fund of Tk. 500 crore. They can also take loan from the bank at 2 percent rate of interest. There is also a special provision for women entrepreneurs. They can take loan up to 50 lakh without any security. But it was not being invested due to various reasons. Bangladesh Bank will promote it so that women entrepreneurs also get the benefits of this sector.
