In a raid in the Hazaribagh police station area of the capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) arrested five people including a leader of an e-commerce (online) fraud ring on Sunday (April 17). During this time, a large quantity of unusable and very low quality old sari, lehenga, three-piece and other goods were seized from them.
The organized crime and car theft prevention team of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Lalbagh Division arrested them by launching a special operation as the ring used to post attractive advertisements on a Facebook page luring the customers delivering good quality products but, indeed, they delivered low quality unusable and damaged goods across the country.
Arrested members of the fraud ring are Md. Bappi Hasan (24), Md. Ariful alias Harisul (19), Md. Sohag Hossain (22), Md. Biplob Sheikh (25) and Nur Mohammad (28).
At a press conference held at the DMP Media Center on Minto Road in the capital on Monday (April 18) morning, Deputy Commissioner of Police Lalbagh Division of the DMP’s Detective Branch Rajib Al Masud said that the arrested Md. Bappi Hasan and Md. Ariful and Harisul have confessed to cheating. With a black laptop in their possession, they used 21 web pages to order good quality sari, lehenga, three pieces and various valuables in collaboration with other accused. The content was being embezzled online by booking on condition of payment at delivery through SA Paribahan, Elephant Road branch.
At the press conference, Rajib Al Masood said, “During the interrogation, the arrested persons said that their accomplices, fugitive accused Shahjalal alias Jalal, Mazharul Mandal and Shariful Sheikh were colluding with each other to open online Facebook pages and embezzle money from customers.” After using a page for a while, customers are deceived and as a result of making bad comments, they later open a new page and cheat in the same way. They further said that the booking man and laborers of SA Paribahan used to make extra bookings in exchange for extra money in each booking.
A case has been filed against the arrested under the Digital Security Act at Hazaribagh police station, the DB official said.
