According to a report by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Global Internet Forum Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), the South Asian country has been able to bring its spending per capita income below the target.
Internet prices in most of the world’s least developed countries were higher than the UN target of 2%; There, in 2021, for every two GB of mobile data based internet in Bangladesh, the monthly per capita expenditure has been 1.36% of the national income. The internet price was $ 2.32. The cost is $ 5.98 per capita.
However, India, Bhutan, Pakistan and Sri Lanka were ahead of Bangladesh in South Asia in terms of affordable mobile internet. But despite the rise in the price of broadband around the world, Bangladesh was ahead of India and Pakistan in broadband.
For every 5 GB wired in Bangladesh, that is, broadband internet connection costs 1.98% of the monthly per capita national income. The price of this internet was $ 3.39. As a purchasing power parity, the cost is $ 8.73. However, broadband costs less in Nepal and Sri Lanka than in Bangladesh in South Asia.
However, according to a report by ITU and A4AI entitled ‘ICT Service Capacity’, fixed broadband prices rose to 3.5% of gross national income (GNI) per capita worldwide in 2021. In 2020, the rate was 2.9%. Mobile broadband prices also rose slightly to 2% of GNI in 2021, from 1.9% in 2020.
According to the report, 96 countries in the world achieved the target set by the UN Broadband Commission last year in terms of mobile internet prices. And in terms of broadband internet prices, 64 countries have achieved the target.
On the other hand, according to the 2021 data of Cable.co.uk, a British company that reviews the price of internet, Bangladesh ranks 8th out of 230 countries in the world in terms of low price of mobile internet. At that time the average price of 1 GB internet in Bangladesh was 0.34 dollars.
In the context of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Internet costs less than 2% of a country’s per capita income. Prices for the country’s data and bandwidth-based internet are within the limits set by the UN Broadband Commission. As a least developed country, Bhutan, Myanmar and Nepal, including Bangladesh, have met the UN targets.
Of these, in 2021, the internet service providers of Bangladesh are providing services on mobile data based internet at 64% and bandwidth at 0.2% below the target price.
In other words, the country’s Internet service sector is also making a significant contribution behind Bangladesh becoming a developing country on the basis of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
That’s why the report quoted ITU Secretary General Hawlin Zhao as saying that broadband internet services are no longer a luxury. This service has become urgent in communication, teleworking, online education and other activities. To achieve the goal of universal and meaningful connectivity, the Internet must be made affordable.
The work that has already been done by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (BTRC). Following the report of ITU-A4AI and Cable.co.uk, new rules have been enacted since February 28 to make ‘data packages’ more accessible in terms of broadband as well as mobile internet pricing.
