In addition to raising questions about the validity of mobile data packages, the High Court has set up a five-member committee to oversee the activities of the BTRC’s ‘Complaints Cell’ to quickly address issues related to mobile networks and mobile internet.
The committee was constituted by the Secretary of the Department of Posts and Telecommunications and the Department of Information and Communication Technology, the Chairman of BTRC, a teacher at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and a representative of AMTAB, an association of mobile operators.
The committee has also been asked to report within 30 days of receiving the order.
On Sunday, the same bench of the High Court issued a rule asking why the package should not be canceled to ensure full use of mobile internet data purchased by the customer and why the inactivity of the defendants should not be declared illegal to ensure clear voice calls, high speed internet and stable mobile network.
The High Court bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman passed the rule on Sunday after a preliminary hearing of a writ petition.
Seven people have been challenged in the rule asking why the package should not be canceled to ensure full use of internet data.
The Court have been asked seven defendants, including Posts and Telecommunications Secretary, BTRC Chairman, Grameenphone CEO Yasir Ajman, Robi CEO Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, Banglalink CEO Eric Oss and Teletalk CEO Md. Shahab Uddin to respond to the rule within four weeks.
Supreme Court lawyer Saifur Rahman Rahi filed the writ petition last week. The High Court issued the rules and directions after the preliminary hearing of the writ petition.
Lawyer MA Masum appeared for the writ petition. Deputy Attorney General Bipul Bagmar represented the state.
