Bangladesh has entered the 5G era on ‘Digital Bangladesh Day’. State-owned mobile operator Teletalk Bangladesh has taken this historic step to accelerate the journey of digital transformation and enable all its customers in the country to enjoy the latest benefits of fifth generation (5G) mobile technology.
The service was launched experimentally on Sunday (December 12) night at the Radisson Hotel in the capital with a program titled ‘New Era with 5G’.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy, ICT Adviser to the Prime Minister, inaugurated the experimental 5G service by virtually joining as the chief guest on the occasion. Bangabandhu’s grandson said that this initiative has been taken for not lagging behind the developed countries.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina greeted through video message. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister promised to launch 5G commercially in the country soon.
Speaking as the special guest, Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Mostafa Jabbar said that Bangladesh had made this preparation in 2018 even though Malaysia is going to launch 5G in March.
AKM Rahmatullah, Chairman of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, Secretary of the Department of Posts and Telecommunications Md. Khalilur Rahman, BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder and Teletalk Bangladesh Limited Managing Director Engineer Md. Sahab Uddin was present on the occasion.
On behalf of Huawei, Simon Lin, Regional Head of Huawei and Zhang Zhengjun, Chief Executive Officer of Huawei Technologies (Bangladesh) Ltd., were virtually involved in this historic journey.
It was informed on the occasion that the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka city, Dhanmondi 32, Bangladesh Secretariat, Manik Mia Avenue (Parliament building area) and the National Memorial area of Savar and Tungipara 5G coverage outside Dhaka are coming under Teletalk. Later 5G network will be expanded at district level. Teletalk plans to launch 5G on 200 sites by next year. 5G service can be used through 5G supported smartphones. In this case customers do not have to change SIM.
At the event, guests gained experience on Internet speeds, low latency, virtual or augmented reality services using 5G technology. Compared to the 4G service, the speed of the 5G will increase by almost 20 times and the latency will decrease by 1 in 10. Teletalk has received permission from BTRC to use 60 MHz spectrum to provide 5G services.
