Game maker Nintendo is set to receive 10 million dollars in compensation from a hacker accused of piracy. Hacker Gary Bowser has agreed to pay the fine, admitting to “knowingly” being involved in cybercrime.
Gary Bowser, a Canadian man arrested by law enforcement has agreed to pay a fine after being found guilty by a court. However, Nintendo has not yet made an official response to the hacker’s agreement to pay compensation.
According to the BBC, Gary Bowser pleaded guilty in a US court in October to a Nintendo piracy case against him. At the time, he was facing a 4.5 million fine and 10 years in prison.
According to the BBC, Gary Bowser was a member of a piracy group called “Team Executor” at the time of the hacking. Among the consoles hacked at the time were the Nintendo Switch and the 3DS console. Bowser also sells pirated versions of the game to others by creating software capable of bypassing gaming console security measures.
Authorities in the Dominican Republic arrested Bowser, a member of Team Executor, in a Nintendo case and handed him over to the US law enforcement in September 2020.
Interestingly, as the name has a partial resemblance to one of Nintendo’s most popular villains, ‘Bauzer’, the whole thing is providing humor to those concerned as a ‘mockery of fate’.
