The Israeli military is monitoring Palestinians using facial recognition technology. By storing pictures of Palestinians using smartphones in Israeli databases, Israeli forces are deciding who among Palestinians will be arrested and who will be released.
The Washington Post reports, citing former members of the Israeli military, that over the past two years, thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank have been photographed and stored in a database using a “Blue Wolf” smartphone technology. That’s why the Israeli military has organized multiple “competitions” to take the most pictures among soldiers. And that database has now become virtually the “Facebook of the Palestinians.”
In fact, almost the same technology is being used in several countries around the world. However, its use has been controversial everywhere. China is using similar facial recognition technology to monitor Uyghurs. Russia has added facial recognition technology to train station transactions. The United Kingdom, on the other hand, has recently been embroiled in controversy over the introduction of facial recognition technology-based transactions for school children.
