More than 90% of cancers are detected in the world through nuclear technology positron emission tomography and computed tomography i.e., PET-CT. This time the same technology will be used on the campus of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. PET-City Lab with cyclotron facility has been set up there and at Dhaka Medical College in NINMAS. The people concerned are expecting that it will be possible to diagnose cancer in this lab in the country for 20 to 25 thousand taka.
The lab has been set up by the National Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (NINMAS) under the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission. From this lab, radio isotopes will now be provided in the labs of public and private hospitals.
Science and Technology Minister Architect Yafes Osman inaugurated the PET-City Lab with cyclotron facility on Sunday afternoon. Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Prof. Md. Sanwar Hossain was present at the time.
Among others, Professor. Dr. Ashok Kumar Pal, a member of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (Biology); Professor Dr. Shamim Mumtaz Ferdousi Begum, Director, National Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (NINMAS) and about 300 guests from different hospitals including Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University were also present on the occasion.
The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission is using nuclear technology to diagnose cancer in the country. Fifteen nuclear treatment centers have been set up across the country. Eight more are being built.
