The High Court has given two more months to improve the quality of the weak mobile phone network in response to the application of the regulatory body BTRC. In the meantime, mobile operators need to address the problem of weak networks and slow internet in remote areas ensure quality mobile network system.
Sunday (September 5) Justice Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollah of the High Court bench passed the order.
The court adjourned the hearing of the writ petition for two months filed on behalf of the Mobile Phone Consumers Association over weak mobile phone networks and slow internet.
At the hearing, the petitioners’ lawyer Advocate Ishrat Hasan raised the issue of network problems in the court.
On the other hand, Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Mohammad Russell Chowdhury informed the court about the BTRC’s written reply on behalf of the state and their activities to solve the network problem.
In reply, the High Court said that the BTRC would make efforts to resolve the network issue, adding that since the BTRC had taken the initiative, the writ case was being kept on standover for two months. However, mobile operators have to solve network problems.
The court told the petitioner’s lawyers that if the network problem is not resolved within two months, it will mention it to the court. This petition will then come up again for hearing.
Earlier on June 8, a writ petition was filed in the High Court challenging the authorities’ inaction to ensure a quality network by resolving the problem of weak mobile phone network and slow internet speed. The writ has sought guidance to provide customers with internationally recognized internet speed services.
Mohiuddin Ahmed, president of the Consumers Association on mobile phones, Mehedi Hasan Dalim, a member of the Law Reporters Forum, and Supreme Court lawyer Md. Advocate Ishrat Hasan filed the writ petition on behalf of Rashidul Hasan.
