A group has been arrested for luring people through fake job ads, posing as specialist doctors, or offering romantic proposals on social media, particularly Facebook. Once victims fell for their schemes, they were extorted for large sums of money.
These details were shared by Deputy Police Commissioner of Media and Public Relations, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, on Tuesday, October 15.
In separate operations conducted by Khilgaon police under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on October 9 and 14, seven members of this group were arrested. The suspects are Nasir Uddin, alias Peter Nasir (28), Anwar, alias Tanmoy, alias Akhtaruzzaman (26), Roksana Rahman, alias Roksana (35), Sima, alias Roksana Akter (32), Jesmin, alias Jesmin Begum (20), Liza (25), and Shahanaz Akter (20).
Talebur Rahman shared that on October 9, a man named Nasir Uddin filed a fraud complaint at Khilgaon police station. According to the case, on October 4, the victim saw a Facebook ad for a security guard job. On October 6, he contacted Sima via WhatsApp. That evening, following Sima’s instructions, Nasir went to a house in Dakshin Goran, Khilgaon. Shortly after, Sima, Anwar, and others arrived. Before Nasir could understand what was happening, they assaulted him, stripped him naked, and recorded a video of the incident. The group then threatened to share the video on social media. Posing as a Detective Branch inspector, Sima demanded BDT 100,000 as ransom from Nasir’s mother, who sent BDT 5,000 via mobile payment. The group also took two gold rings, a mobile phone, and BDT 32,500 in cash from Nasir. Later that night, Anwar blindfolded the victim and abandoned him on the Khilgaon Flyover.
Following the case filed on October 9, the police arrested Nasir, Anwar, Akhtaruzzaman, Roksana, Sima, Jesmin, and Liza. They were produced in court the next day. On October 14, Shahanaz Akter was also arrested in a raid in the Khilgaon area.
During initial questioning, the suspects admitted to running this scam for a long time. They lured victims through fake job ads, posing as specialist doctors, or making romantic offers via social media. Once the victims were trapped, they were extorted for money and valuables. Nasir Uddin was found to have eight prior cases, including charges of murder and extortion.
