Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is back in the field to root out illegal VoIP business. In a joint operation, 4 persons were arrested and brought under the law in a week, along with the seizure of a large quantity of VoIP equipment from Shyamoli and Mirpur in the capital. According to the survey, state-owned Teletalk’s SIM is most commonly used to convert voice calls to internet calls using high frequency radiolink. However, the names of the detained persons have not been disclosed.
It is reported that a joint team of BTRC’s Enforcement and Inspection Directorate team, RAB-4 and National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC) on Wednesday seized a large quantity of illegal VoIP equipment from Kalyanpur area of the capital and arrested one person from the spot. On Thursday, BTRC filed a case against the arrested person under Section 35(2)/55(7)/73 of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulation Act, 2001 (Amendment 2010).
In a press release on Thursday, BTRC said, 13 512 port SIM boxes, 460 Teletalk SIMs, 4 WiFi routers, 2 laptops, mobile phones, router IPS and various equipment used in VoIP activities were seized in the raid.
Earlier on Tuesday, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Enforcement and Inspection Directorate team conducted raids in West Sheorapara Pirer Bagh Street of Mirpur and Ahmed Nagar area of Mirpur-1 with the help of 21 DB Police. At that time, 3 accused were arrested along with a huge quantity of illegal VoIP equipment. In the raid, 6 512 port SIM boxes, 5 laptops, 3290 Teletalk SIMs, 1640 Grameenphone SIMs, 100 Airtel SIMs, 87 Banglalink SIMs, 1 CPU, 1 monitor, 21 modems, 1 5 port desktop switch, various equipment used in VoIP activities were seized.
