32 students, including 24 from BUET, who were arrested on charges of conspiracy against the government while on a trip to Tanguar Haor, have been released from Sunamganj jail. However, there were two children among the students, for whom bail was also sought. These children will be heard in the children’s court.
The students were also released on bail from the district jail around 10:30 pm when the bail papers arrived from the court on Wednesday (August 2) evening. However, none of the students spoke to reporters at that time. They boarded the bus prepared for them in front of Jail Gate and left for Dhaka.
Earlier, District Chief Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Farhan Sadiq granted them bail around 1 pm. The president of the District Lawyers Association Md. Taibur Rahman Babul confirmed the matter.
He also said that the court was satisfied and released each accused on a bond of 5 thousand taka. Among them were two children, for whom bail has also been sought. ‘These children will be heard in the children’s court. Hearing will be held today, we hope we will get justice.’
Jamal Uddin Chowdhury, father of BUET student Shakib Shahriar, spoke to the journalists present on behalf of all the parents before leaving Sunamganj jail for Dhaka.
He said, the court has granted bail to our children; We are happy for that. We want justice from the court and expect no further harassment will be done with this case. We demand that the case be dismissed from the concerned authorities.
In response to reporters’ questions, he said, “We have not yet received the devices used by our children. I hope to get it. Besides, we are not yet able to communicate well with our children; So there is no more to say”.
It may be noted that, a total of 34 students, including 26 students from BUET, took a boat from Sunamganj’s Tahirpur upazila market Boat-Ghat on Sunday morning to go to Tanguar Haor. At one point of the trip, two police speedboats stopped the boat in front of the new market on the way to Takkerghat tourist area through Patlai River. At that time, police arrested 34 students and took them to the police station.
