Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that an initiative has been taken to generate electricity by using ocean waves. For this reason, Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute has procured Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) instrument. To implement the target, research activities are being carried out on currents and waves mapping in the sea area adjacent to Chattogram from Teknaf in the financial year 2022-23.
The Prime Minister conveyed this information in response to a question from Awami League Member of Parliament M Abdul Latif in the National Parliament session on Wednesday (July 5).
The question and answer table was presented chaired by the Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Dr. Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury.
In the question and answer session, the Prime Minister said that to ensure the marine environment, the Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute from 2018, starting from Saint Martin Island to Chattogram, the marine environment of about 5 thousand square kilometers including water quality, sediment flow, water temperature, pressure, salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll, dissolved Oxygen, COD, BOD, turbidity, acidification etc. data are collected regularly. The Oceanographic Research Institute has measured the carbon stock of about 3,000 square kilometers of coastal sea area from St. Martin’s Island to Qutubdia and the mangrove area in the estuarine areas of Naf Estuary, Reju Khal Estuary and Maheshkhali Channel.
In addition, the research institute has conducted a microplastic study of the coastal area from St. Martin Island to Feni and the Sundarbans area since 2018 to determine the presence of microplastics in the sea and is preparing a map in this regard.
The Prime Minister also said that the research program for determining all the physical parameters (such as: wave data, tide data, current data including other temperature, pressure, salinity, depth, etc.) of the coastal and nearshore areas in the Bay of Bengal is going on and 70 percent has been completed so far.
