Google has been fined $42.7 million by the Federal Court of Australia for allegedly misleading users in collecting their personal ‘location data’. Google has misled users into thinking that personal location data can only be collected through the ‘Location History’ settings on Android phones. News Reuters.
Australia’s market watchdog has reportedly found evidence that Google misled some users in collecting personal location data. This confusion is done through Google’s Android operating system.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said Google misled users into thinking that personal location data could only be collected through the ‘Location History’ settings on Android phones.
But the fact is, it is possible to collect user’s location data from the device through the user’s internet usage and various Android apps. Various Android apps actively collect and store user location data.
The ACCC estimates that about 1.3 million Google account users in Australia got the wrong idea.
