BlackBerry Limited will sell out its patents for mobile devices, messaging and wireless networking for $ 600 million. A spokesman of the company said it in a statement on Monday. News Reuters.
According to BlackBerry, the sale of the patent to Vehicle, Katapalt IP Innovations Inc. will not interfere with the use of the company’s products or services.
The announcement came just weeks after BlackBerry, the most popular smartphone brand among executives, political figures and celebrities, shut down their smartphone business in 2000. As a result, BlackBerry’s share in pre-market trading fell 3.6%.
Under the deal, BlackBerry will receive $ 450 million in cash and $ 150 million in promissory notes.
BlackBerry smartphones were popular for their Qwerty physical keyboard and BBM instant messaging services. Currently the company’s main business is cyber security and software services for car manufacturers.
