Students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University (BDU) organized a human chain on Saturday (January 25) in front of the university’s administrative building in Makisabathan, Kaliakoir, Gazipur, demanding the issuance of a gazette notification to rename the institution as “Bangladesh Digital University.”
According to sources, on August 5 of last year, students proposed renaming the university from Bangabandhu Digital University to Bangladesh Digital University. This proposal, supported by a petition with mass signatures, was submitted through the university administration to the President and the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Despite months passing, no official gazette has been issued. On January 16, University Advisor Asif Bhuiyan confirmed in a verified Facebook post that the proposal to rename the university as “Bangladesh Digital University” had been approved. However, the lack of a subsequent gazette notification has left students disheartened.
In response, students organized a human chain on January 25, urging swift action. During the demonstration, students said, “We, along with our student representatives, have signed a petition requesting the name ‘Bangladesh Digital University.’ Why is there such a delay? We unanimously demand that the gazette be issued without further delay.”
The students expressed frustration over the slow progress despite administrative support. They emphasized that the renaming is not just a change of name but a critical step tied to their identity and aspirations. They warned that ignoring their demands would force them to resort to larger-scale protests.
Speaking on the matter, the Vice-Chancellor assured the students, “We stand with your demands. We are doing everything possible to ensure the swift issuance of a gazette notification for renaming the university as ‘Bangladesh Digital University.'”
