Qualcomm is developing a mobile chip designed to enhance generative AI capabilities, building on the success of its laptop-focused AI chip, according to a report by Reuters.
The San Diego-based company, known as the world’s largest mobile phone chip vendor, has been expanding its business by recruiting several former Apple engineers in 2021. These engineers were initially tasked with designing AI-powered chips for laptops, and their first product, under the “Orion” brand, was launched earlier this year for Microsoft’s Windows-based laptops.
Now, the same team is working to adapt this powerful AI-driven technology for mobile phones. Qualcomm is refining the chip components, creating the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, capable of handling advanced image and text generation tasks.
Qualcomm has already secured agreements with several major brands, including Samsung Electronics, Asustek Computer, and Xiaomi, to use its new AI-specialized chips in their devices.
