A science workshop was held in honor of the 131st birth anniversary of renowned scientist Meghnad Saha at Kishori Lal Jubilee School and College in Old Dhaka. Around 40 female students from grades 6 to 8 participated in the event.
Meghnad Saha was an alumnus of Kishori Lal Jubilee School and College. Beyond his groundbreaking research, Saha was actively involved in promoting science education, making him a great source of inspiration for the students of this institution. He is globally recognized for his “Law of Ionization” or “Saha Equation,” which plays a crucial role in determining the chemical composition and temperature of celestial bodies such as stars. His work brought a revolutionary change in astrophysics, and it continues to be used in space research today.
Although Meghnad Saha was born in this region, there are few significant celebrations in his honor. Since 2014, the Meghnad Saha Science Workshop has been organized by the Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science and the Maksudul Alam Science Laboratory, as part of the Junior Science Congress. This year, the workshop was also part of the World Space Week 2024 celebrations, focusing on Saha’s contributions to astrophysics. The event featured Munir Hasan, president of the Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science, as the chief guest. He highlighted various aspects of Saha’s life and discussed his monumental contributions.
A quiz competition on Meghnad Saha’s life was held during the workshop, and students actively participated in hands-on scientific experiments and analyses. Principal Dulal Chandra Saha expressed his desire for the institution to be more involved in such events in the future, emphasizing that workshops like this help foster a greater interest in science among students. The event concluded with the distribution of prizes to the quiz competition winners.
