Raqibul Islam, the central president of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (BNP’s student wing), has filed a general diary (GD) with Shahbagh Police Station in the capital, terming the social media campaign portraying him as “married with four children” as “fabricated.” In the GD, he described the campaign as “deliberately false and defamatory.”
On Friday, Raqibul Islam visited Shahbagh Police Station to file the GD, which was accepted by the duty officer in the evening.
The GD mentions that false and defamatory information had been spread with malicious intent to tarnish his image through Facebook groups Ami Manush Awami League Na and Oporajeyo Dhaka Bishwabidyaloy by their moderators.
Confirming the GD, Shahbagh Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Mainul Islam Khan Pulak stated that the central Chhatra Dal president, Raqibul Islam, had lodged a complaint regarding offensive posts made from two Facebook pages. The police’s cyber unit will investigate and take action accordingly.
Earlier, on Thursday, a post was shared in the Facebook group “Oporajeyo Dhaka Bishwabidyaloy,” consisting of former and current students of Dhaka University. The post, made by an account under the name Tania Sultana, featured a picture of Raqibul Islam with the caption, “May Allah keep Chhatra Dal’s central president Raqibul Islam, along with his wife and four children, in good health.”
In response, many leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal labeled the post as a “rumor” and protested. In his GD, following this campaign, Raqibul mentioned that false and defamatory information had been deliberately posted and approved by moderators of the two Facebook groups—”Ami Manush Awami League Na” and “Oporajeyo Dhaka Bishwabidyaloy”—to humiliate him on social media.
Raqibul, a student of Dhaka University’s 2006-07 academic year, took charge as the central president of Chhatra Dal on March 1. Prior to that, he served as the organization’s senior joint general secretary and the convener of the Dhaka University unit.
