The Provost, Assistant Provost and members of the Proctorial Body have resigned
Vice-chancellors in some universities played a mysterious role in the anti-discrimination student movement. Among them, the students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed, Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Kabir Hossain and Treasurer Professor Amina Parveen to resign.
Hafizul Islam, coordinator of anti-discrimination student movement of SUST said that they have been given time till 5 pm on Thursday to resign.
However, it was learned on Thursday afternoon that they were absent from office activities three days before the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country on Monday (August 5). When contacted to find the vice-chancellor on Thursday, Professor Dr. Md. Kabir Hossain’s mobile phone was found switched off. Several phone calls were made to the Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed, but there was no response.
Many officials and employees, who did not wish to be named, said that the vice-chancellor and pro vice-chancellor left the campus after the one-point demand of the anti-discrimination student movement was declared to bring down the government. However, they are inquiring about the overall movement of the university from the trustees through mobile phones.
On the other hand, all the Provosts, Assistant Provosts and Proctorial Body members of all residential halls in SUST have resigned on Thursday in view of the demands made by the students. Ordinary students expressed their demands on social media to withdraw all the personnel from administrative duties including vice-chancellor, pro vice-chancellor and proctors who worked directly and indirectly against the protesting students.
Proctor Professor Kamruzzaman Chowdhury confirmed the resignation in the afternoon and said that all members of the Proctorial Body, Hall Provosts, Assistant Provosts have submitted their resignations. We all agreed to resign. We have already submitted the resignation letter to the registrar of the university.
