স্পাইনাল মাসকুলার অ্যাট্রোফি বা এসএমএ রোগীদের নিয়ে দেশে প্রথমবারের মতো মঙ্গলবার (২ জুলাই) দিনব্যাপী ‘মাল্টিডিসিপ্লিনারি এসএমএ ক্নিনিক’ অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে। এসএমএ চিকিৎসার সাথে জড়িত চিকিৎসক, থেরাপিস্ট, পুষ্টিবিদসহ বিভিন্ন ডিসিপ্লিনের বিশেষজ্ঞদের সমন্বয়ে সম্পূর্ণ বিনামেূল্যে এই ক্লিনিকের আয়োজন করা হয়।
দেশের এসএসএ রোগীদের কল্যাণে কাজ করা একমাত্র সংগঠন ‘কিউর এসএমএ বাংলাদেশ’ এর উদ্যোগে এই মাল্টিডিসিপ্লিনারি এসএমএ ক্লিনিকের আয়োজন করা হয়। ক্লিনিকের আয়োজনে সহযোগিতা করে বারাকাহ জেনারেল হাসপাতাল। রাজারবাগে অবস্থিত হাসপাতালটির শাখায় এই ক্লিনিক অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। এতে দেশের বিভিন্ন অঞ্চল থেকে আগত মোট ২০জন এসএমএ রোগী সেবা গ্রহণ করেন। ক্লিনিকে চিকিসৎদের পরামর্শের পাশাপাশি থেরাপি, নমুনা সংগ্রহ ও পরীক্ষা এবং প্রয়োজনীয় ডিভাইসের বিষয়ে পরামর্শ দেয়ারও ব্যবস্থা রাখা হয়।
মাল্টিডিসিপ্লিনারি এসএমএ ক্লিনিকে বিশেষজ্ঞ চিকিৎসক হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন রেসপিরেটরি মেডিসিনে প্রফেসর ডা. এ আর এম লুৎফুল কবীর, পেডিয়াট্রিক অর্থোপেডিক্সে প্রফেসর ডা. সারওয়ার ইবনে সালাম রোমেল, পেডিয়াট্রিক নিউরোলজিতে ডা. দীপা সাহা, রেসপিরেটরি মেডিসিনে ডা. সুদীপ্তা সাহাসহ সিনিয়র ক্লিনিক্যাল অকোপেশনাল থেরাপিস্ট এসএম ফারহান বিন হোসাইন, পুষ্টিবিদ নাঈমা রুবি, ফিজিওথেরাপিস্ট মো. মাসুম এবং প্রসথেটিস্ট অ্যান্ড অর্থোটিস্ট নির্মল কান্তি দেব রায়।
প্রসঙ্গত, এসএমএ বা স্পাইনাল মাসকুলার অ্যাট্রোফি একটি দুরারোগ্য বিরল রোগ। পেশির সঞ্চালনকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে যে মোটর নিউরোন, তা নষ্ট হওয়াই জিনঘটিত এই বিরল রোগের কারণ। রোগের তীব্রতা অনুযায়ী, টাইপ ওয়ান থেকে টাইপ ফোর পর্যন্ত হয় এসএমএ। এর ওষুধ বাজারে এলেও তা সাধারণের কেনা সাধ্যাতীত। পৃথিবীর অনেক দেশের মতো আমাদের দেশেও এই রোগে আক্রান্ত রোগী রয়েছে। তবে সচেতনতার অভাবে এই রোগে আক্রান্তদের একটি বড় অংশ টেস্ট এবং চিকিৎসায় আওতায় আসছে না। ফলে চিকিৎসার অভাবেই দেশে অসংখ্য শিশু এই রোগে আক্রান্ত হয়ে প্রাণ হারাচ্ছে।
এসএমএ লক্ষণগুলো বিকাশের আগে প্রাথমিক চিকিৎসা গ্রহণ করা হলে পরবর্তীতে চিকিৎসার ভালো ফলাফল পেতে তা সহায়ক হয়। একটি নবজাতকের স্ক্রীনিংয়ের সাহায্যে প্রাথমিক চিকিৎসা গ্রহণ করা যেতে পারে। ওষুধেরে পাশাপাশি থেরাপিসহ আনুষঙ্গিক সেবার মাধ্যমে একজন আক্রান্ত শিশুকে স্বাভাবিক জীবন দেয়া যায়। এমনকি গর্ভাবস্থায় এমনিওটিক ফ্লুইড পরীক্ষা করে অনাগত শিশুটি আক্রান্ত কিনা- তা জেনে প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া যায়। তাই সচেতনতাই পারে এই রোগ প্রতিরোধে কার্যকর ভূমিকা রাখতে।
এসএমএ রোগটি বাবা-মায়ের জিনগত সমস্যার কারণে হয়। যদি কোনও দম্পতি এসএমএ ক্যারিয়ার হয় বা এসএমএ রোগ হওয়ার জন্য দায়ী জিন বহনকারী হয়, তাদের বাচ্চার ২৫ শতাংশ আশঙ্কা থাকে এসএমএ রোগ হওয়ার। ২৫ শতাংশ সম্ভাবনা থাকে সুস্থ বাচ্চা হওয়ার, আর ৫০ শতাংশ আশঙ্কা থাকে, সুস্থ বাচ্চা হলেও এসএমএ ক্যারিয়ার হওয়ার।
দেশে এখন পর্যন্ত চিহ্নিত রোগী ১৬৫ জন। দেশের বেশ কয়েকটি হাসপাতাল, ক্লিনিক, ডায়াগনস্টিক সেন্টার এবং ফার্মাসিউটিক্যালের কাছ থেকে প্রাথমিক তথ্য সংগ্রহ করে সংগঠনটি এই পরিসংখ্যান তৈরি করেছে।
