On July 10th, “WING of Change: Celebrating Women Empowerment” held at the Seagull Hotel in Cox’s Bazar district, recognized the remarkable achievements of women entrepreneurs and shed light on the valuable contributions made by different stakeholders dedicated to women’s economic empowerment. Md. Nashim Ahmed, ADC, Cox’s Bazar, and DDLG, attended as the chief guests and Tapati Saha, Programme Manager, UN Women as special guest.
The event brought together influential figures such as the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Upazila Woman’s Vice Chairmans, and other local government representatives from the targeted WING upazilas. Women entrepreneurs from all corners of the district joinedthis idiscussion. Their presence underscored the unwavering commitment to promoting women’s empowerment and fostering an environment conducive to achieving economic autonomy by the women. In addition, distinguished representatives from esteemed organizations including UN Women, UNDP, Innovision Consulting, and Purplewood were present to lend their support.
A panel discussion with experts and women entrepreneurs delved into the prospects and challenges associated with women’s empowerment in today’s society. Key topics included raising awareness among local authorities and communities regarding sociocultural and structural barriers that hinder women’s economic empowerment, with a focus on nurturing favorable social norms. Moreover, the panel aimed to identify obstacles within the private sector and develop strategies to promote the integrated role of the private sector in women’s economic activities while expanding women’s access to markets. The event honored local government representatives, women entrepreneurs, and private sector figures for their contributions to women’s economic development. UN Women and UNDP presented accolades to the awardees, symbolizing their valuable efforts.
Md. Nashim Ahmed, ADC, Cox’s Bazar and DDLG, Chief guest of the programme said “We are seeing initiatives here and there. But still violence keeps occurring and it is increasing. This means we need to focus on the intermission. The necessity of schooling is there, and it has to start from the family.”
He expressed that prioritizing equity over equality holds greater significance. While equality focuses on treating everyone the same, the emphasis should be on providing equal opportunities and empowerment for all individuals. He emphasized the importance of striving for equity as our ultimate objective. Additionally, during his speech, he remarked that the current allocation of 3% for the Women Development Forum is insufficient. He acknowledged the broader scope of initiatives undertaken by WING and emphasized the need for greater support and implementation of such endeavors.
The joint initiative of UNDP, UNCDF, and UN Women, with support from the Government of Netherlands, the WING program equips women with skills for dignified economic participation, aiming to dismantle discriminatory attitudes and drive inclusive local economic development. Innovision Consulting and Purplewood Limited serve as implementation partners, ensuring the program’s success. The “WING of Change: Celebrating Women Empowerment” event served as a platform to address challenges faced by women, promoting an inclusive society where women thrive and contribute to the nation’s growth.
