Emerging social media platform Bluesky has reached a milestone of 20 million users, tripling its user base in just three months. Only a week ago, the platform crossed the 15-million-user mark, according to a report by Engadget.
While still trailing behind competitors Threads and X (formerly Twitter), Bluesky’s growth trajectory is noteworthy. Over the past week, the platform has added nearly 1 million users daily, mirroring Threads’ rapid expansion, which has averaged similar daily gains and maintained this momentum for three months. Threads currently boasts 275 million monthly active users.
Bluesky’s recent surge in popularity has propelled it to the top of Apple’s App Store for six consecutive days, while it has held the top spot for non-gaming apps on Google Play Store for four days. In contrast, Meta’s Threads ranks second on the App Store.
The platform’s rise may be linked to increasing user dissatisfaction with X. On November 7, following the U.S. presidential elections, Bluesky saw a significant uptick in user sign-ups, coinciding with reports of X users attempting to deactivate their accounts.
Bluesky is also setting itself apart through its user-centric policies. Unlike competitors, it has committed not to use user-generated content for training generative AI. In contrast, X’s updated privacy policy permits the use of tweets for AI training in collaboration with third parties.
CEO Jay Graber emphasized that Bluesky remains ad-free to preserve user experience, a stance that contrasts with Threads’ plans to begin testing advertisements in January.
Bluesky’s swift growth and distinct approach suggest it is carving a unique niche in the competitive social media landscape.
