Amazon Prime Video, one of the most popular OTT platforms, is set to introduce advertisements even for users with a subscription. This change has already been implemented in several countries, including the U.S., Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, and the U.K., earlier this year.
Starting next year, Amazon plans to roll out this ad-supported model in additional countries, including India, Brazil, Japan, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, despite users having an active subscription.
The company explained that displaying ads is necessary to sustain funding for content. In other words, this move is aimed at increasing revenue.
Amazon clarified that the number of ads shown will be fewer compared to traditional TV and other streaming platforms. Additionally, they plan to introduce a new ad-free subscription plan, with details and pricing to be revealed soon.
Users will be informed via email several weeks before the ad-supported model goes into effect.
