The announcement of this year’s Nobel Prize winners began on October 7 (Monday) at 3:30 PM Bangladesh time, in accordance with the tradition of declaring the winners on the first Monday of October. The announcement was made by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and will continue until October 14 across various categories. All information regarding the Nobel Prize announcements will be published live on the official Nobel Prize website.
On the first day, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine, awarding the prize jointly to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their significant contributions to the control of microRNA and post-transcriptional gene regulation.
The Nobel laureates will receive a Nobel medal, a certificate, and a total of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1 crore 10 lakh Swedish kronor). This amount currently equates to around 1,067,000 US dollars or approximately 12.8 crore Bangladeshi taka. The prize money will be shared between the two winners.
According to the Nobel Prize website, the Nobel Prize announcements will continue with the Physics category on October 8, Chemistry on October 9, Literature on October 10, and the highly anticipated Peace Prize announcement on October 11. The formal conclusion of the Nobel Prize announcements will occur on October 14 with the declaration of the Economics winner.
In 2023, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was jointly awarded to biochemist Katalin Karikó, of Hungarian descent, and American physician and scientist Drew Weissman for their contributions to the field.
Each year, Nobel Prize winners are announced in six categories. The Nobel Prizes are awarded annually in the name of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who was the inventor of dynamite. The awards have been given since 1901 for outstanding contributions in various fields, five years after his death.
