Mohammad Munir Chowdhury, Director General of the National Museum of Science and Technology said, “The young generation should come forward as university students to face the challenge of climate change. Instead of being confined to the class room and drowning in mobile phones, we have to go to the field and create widespread public awareness about the dangers of environmental pollution and create a social movement by identifying the polluters.
He opined so while speaking at the seminar held on Sunday at the Faculty of Biological Sciences of Chittagong University on “Effects of Global Climate Change”.
The Director General also said that the brick kilns around the university should be identified as a threat to the environment of the university and these old technology brick kilns should be removed or forced to convert to new technology. We have to protect our campus from the scourge of plastic and polythene. In Japan, students at educational institutions themselves keep their campuses clean. Once upon a time, Japan was also plagued with pollution. But over time, Japan is one of the world’s most environmentally friendly countries. After obtaining the degree, the accuracy of university education is to devote oneself to research work instead of rushing to the attraction of government jobs. University is not just about getting certificates, University is for research. University of Chittagong is the best place for climate research. The quiet environment of the campus is very conducive for research work. Apart from academic life, young students can gain knowledge on waste management by visiting various brick kilns and factories and undertake monitoring duties on waste management with the Department of Environment.”
The Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Touhid Hossain was present as the Chief Guest in the seminar. Professor Dr. Mohammad Al Forkan and Professor Dr. Laila Khaleda were also present as special guests.
