To introduce students to fundamental and theoretical aspects of physics, the “Jamal Nazrul Islam Memorial Winter School” workshop was held at BRAC University in Dhaka from January 19–23. The workshop covered topics such as theoretical physics, mathematical physics, and string theory.
The main workshop is scheduled to take place from January 28 to February 3 at BRAC University’s residential campus in Savar. Organized jointly by BRAC University’s School of Data and Sciences and UNESCO’s International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) Outreach Program, Physics for Bangladesh, this is the first initiative of its kind to commemorate the renowned Bangladeshi physicist, mathematician, and astronomer Jamal Nazrul Islam, who passed away in 2013.
Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam is celebrated for his groundbreaking research on the origin and fate of the universe. This workshop aims to disseminate his contributions and familiarize students and researchers with fundamental and theoretical physics concepts.

Dr. Sadman Salam, a faculty member of BRAC University, delivered a lecture on quantum field theory. He remarked, “Such workshops are essential for the advancement of fundamental science in Bangladesh. I am thrilled by the enthusiastic participation and insightful questions from the students. I am optimistic about the future of science in our country.”
Professor Mahbub Majumder, Dean of BRAC University’s School of Data and Sciences, stated, “This workshop is the culmination of nearly 20 years of dedicated effort. Its goal is to open doors for our students to research black holes, cosmology, and mathematical physics.”
Physics for Bangladesh organizer and BRAC University faculty member Ahmed Raqib Kamal shared, “We began this initiative last year with an online course, where 130 students participated. Building on that momentum, we organized the Jamal Nazrul Islam Memorial Winter School. As a developing nation, we must not fall behind in the advancement of science.”
During the main workshop, Professor Fernando Quevedo of the University of Cambridge and New York University Abu Dhabi will discuss cosmology and string theory.
Professor Subhro Raju from the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), India, will delve into black holes and the information paradox.
Theoretical physicist Professor Ashoke Sen, also from ICTS, will speak on black holes and string theory.
