The accident occurred in the early hours of December 19 at the 300 Feet area of Purbachal Township. Muhtasim Masud, a second-year Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) student at BUET, was killed instantly when a speeding private car struck his motorcycle, which was parked at a police checkpoint. Two of his friends, BUET students Mehedi Hasan Khan (22) and Amit Saha (22), were critically injured and are receiving treatment at Square Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital, respectively.
Muhtasim, a resident of Green Road, Kalabagan, Dhaka, was the son of Masud Mia. Following the incident, his father filed a case under the Road Transport Act at Rupganj Police Station.
The police report states that Muhtasim and his two friends had gone to the 300 Feet Neela Market area for dinner on Thursday evening. While returning home around 3:00 a.m., their motorcycle was stopped at a police checkpoint for questioning. At that moment, a private car, driven recklessly, struck the parked motorcycle, killing Muhtasim on the spot and injuring his two friends.
Police officers at the checkpoint apprehended the driver and two passengers of the car and recovered an empty liquor bottle and a beer can from the vehicle. The suspects were then taken to Rupganj Police Station for further investigation.
