Authorities at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet handed over two outsiders to the police on Monday for engaging in disorderly behavior on campus. One individual was detained for allegedly assaulting a security guard while entering the campus in the afternoon, and the other was apprehended for smoking cannabis near the central playground in the evening. Officer-in-Charge of Sylhet’s Jalalabad Police Station, Harunur Rashid Chowdhury, stated that the detainees would be presented in court on Tuesday.
The individual accused of assaulting the security guard has been released into the custody of his parents with a written undertaking. His identity has not yet been disclosed. The person accused of consuming cannabis is reportedly a resident of an area adjacent to the university. The injured security guard, identified as Rakib Mia, sustained injuries to his face and received primary treatment at the university’s medical center.
Regarding the incident, SUST Proctor Mokhlesur Rahman said, “The individual who assaulted the security guard was handed over to the police after questioning. However, he apologized to the guard, and we requested the police to summon his parents and release him under a written commitment. The person accused of consuming cannabis will be dealt with according to the law by the police.”
Faisal Hossain, a Sociology student and eyewitness to the incident, stated, “In the evening, an outsider was smoking cannabis under the gallery near the central field. Some of us approached him and asked why he was doing so. He replied that he needed to smoke cannabis on Victory Day. At that time, he behaved abnormally. Later, he was handed over to the police through the proctorial body.”
According to university officials, students, eyewitnesses, and the victims, the first incident occurred at around 4:15 PM when an outsider attempted to enter the campus through the main gate on a motorcycle. On-duty security guards intervened, leading to a verbal altercation. At one point, the individual struck security guard Rakib Mia in the face with his motorcycle key, injuring him.
The second incident took place at approximately 5:15 PM, when a man was found smoking cannabis near the university’s central playground. Several students confronted and detained him. He was later handed over to the police through the proctorial body, and students claimed to have found cannabis in his possession.
The university administration and police are handling both incidents to maintain order and safety on campus.
